HALL OF FAME INDUCTION 2020

BREEDERS OF NGSPA FIELD TRIAL GERMAN SHORTHAIRED POINTERS

KEITH & BOBBI RICHARDSON

Keith was surprised when Bobbi said: “Let’s buy a German Shorthaired Pointer”. It was 1996 and they were visiting Seattle where they found a litter with one female left. The puppy was beautiful and when Bobbi studied her pedigree, she discovered Greta’s dam was the last surviving bitch of the Van Thalberg line. This was serendipitous because the line’s founder was Don Miner, who had been Keith’s favorite college professor. Greta became a part of their family, and took them on a path through NAVHDA becoming a Versatile Champion, AKC Hunt Tests becoming a Master Hunter, and AKC Field Trials. Her first litter won Natural Ability and Utility Dog NAVHDA Breeder’s Awards, a rare achievement.

After attending their first NGSPA Championship in 2002 Keith and Bobbi decided that NGSPA trials were the ultimate test of performance, and they set out to breed dogs to compete at the national level. Bobbi had studied canine genetics and structure and applied the principles of line breeding to achieve the traits of “nose”, athleticism, endurance, cooperation and intelligence. They bought Billy Dees Blues in A, a proven NGSPA and AKC Champion, and out of two great lines: Rockin Rollin Billy and Beier’s Evolution. They bred her to Sport’s See that Spekk, a Rockin Rollin Billy grandson. Their first “field trial” litter was born in May, 2003 and they kept 2 puppies and co-owned one. The “Blues Crew” took the 2004 GSPCA Futurity by storm winning First and Third places and earning an Honorable Mention. All three dogs became All-Age.

Their dogs have earned many National placements and special honors, with an emphasis on All-Age:

7 NGSPA Nationals placements: 4 All-Age, 1 Amateur SD, 1 Open SD, 1 Futurity.

8 NGPDA National placements:  6 All-Age, 1 ASD, 1 Open Derby

11 GSPCA National placements: 1 All-Age, 4 Open Gun Dog, 1 Amateur Gun Dog, 5 Futurity

2 Invitational Champions: 1 Open Shooting Dog Invitational, 1 All-Age Invitational

5 NGSPA Dog of The Year wins: 4 All-Age, 1 Open Shooting Dog.

They have earned 161 FDSB placements with 30 dogs.

Keith and Bobbi “fell into” hosting Championships when they were asked to host the NGSPA Region 8 at their Cheyenne ranch in 2002, later launching the “Hun” Championship. They also host two NGSPA Championships at their Idaho ranch. At Bobbi’s suggestion they stepped up to save the foundering NGSPA Open Shooting Dog Invitational which had been cancelled in 2015. Under the Richardson’s leadership the 2016 event was held, and after gaining Board approval they held the first Amateur Shooting Dog Invitational to follow. In 2018 Bobbi wanted to launch an Open All-Age Invitational, which the Board approved, and it was first held in January, 2019. These three Invitationals have arguably raised the breeding and performance standards of the GSP.

Keith and Bobbi have done a lot to raise the interest in GSP All-Age dogs and the awareness that All-Age genetics drive the continued improvement in performance which we all seek. From the outset they began breeding to produce and campaign them, and have actively promoted an expansion of All-Age competitions in addition to the Invitational. They held one of the first Amateur All-Age Championships in 2007, and by 2019 the Championship number had increased to five. The NGSPA is seeing growth in All-Age entries across the country, and as a result the Board approved the first NGSPA Amateur All-Age National Championship for 2020.

The Richardsons have supported the GSP wing of the Bird Dog Hall of Fame with their first donation to a fund in 2004. The Board approved the concept in 2007, and construction was completed in 2012 after $150,000 was raised. The Richardsons received a plaque for their part. An additional $150,000 was required to fund an endowment to meet future costs.  An unpaid balance of $100,000 remained when Keith was elected to the BDF Board in 2014. In 2016 as NGSPA President, Keith launched a fund-raising challenge which raised the required $100,000.

With Bobbi’s support and encouragement Keith has served on the NGSPA Board since 2006, and as President from 2012. Since 2012 the NGSPA Board has accomplished a number of initiatives that have strengthened their organization and events, and elevated their venues to dominate the GSP field trial world. The 2019 move of their National Championships from Booneville, AR to Grove Spring, MO was driven by Keith and will stand as a landmark decision of the Board.

The Richardsons are committed to using their time and resources to contribute to the constant improvement of the GSP breed and to support the venues and institutions sharing that goal.

HALL OF FAME NOMINATION LETTER

Dear GSP Field Trial Hall of Fame Selection Committee:

I nominate Keith and Roberta Richardson for induction into the German Shorthaired Pointer Field Trial Hall of Fame (“Hall of Fame”).  I propose that the Hall of Fame Selection Committee consider and vote on their candidacy jointly, as a couple.  Understanding that there is no precedent for electing a husband and wife jointly to the Hall of Fame, I further suggest that the Committee vote on any necessary amendments to the eligibility rules to allow for consideration of a husband and wife for election in tandem where the circumstances warrant.  Keith and Bobbi Richardson have co-owned almost all their dogs and have equally contributed to the sport as a team.  I cannot imagine that one would want to enter the Hall of Fame without the other.  If the Committee can only evaluate their eligibility separately, then please consider this a nomination of both candidates.

The Committee should elect the Richardsons to the Hall of Fame because no two people have done more to advance shorthair field trialing and promote the German Shorthaired Pointer breed, period.  They have both given tirelessly and selflessly through their service to the National German Shorthaired Pointer Association, Inc. (“NGSPA”) and by hosting six NGSPA championships and have owned, bred, and handled, in the case of Keith, numerous Champions, National Champions, and AKC Field Champions and Amateur Field Champions.  Keith and Bobbi Richardson are both over the minimum age for eligibility.  I respectfully submit that they should not wait another year to receive this small token, relative to their immense contributions, of the field trial community’s appreciation.

Please note that my nomination is for this year’s nomination cycle.  This nomination is postmarked by September 1, as required by the enclosed Hall of Fame nomination form for consideration this year.

Introduction to the Breed

The Richardsons bought their first shorthair in 1996 from Don Miner—a 2015 Hall of Fame inductee.  Incidentally, Keith attended Don Miner’s economics class many years before as a student at San Jose State University.  Bobbi began breeding Lhasa Apsos for the show ring over forty-five years ago, building a reputation as a preeminent breeder of Lhasa Apsos sold around the world.  In this capacity, Bobbi became an expert on dog breeding principles, devouring all available literature on the subject and putting line-breeding principles into practice.  The Richardsons initially tested their shorthairs in NAVHDA.  Not long afterwards, however, they witnessed an all-age shorthair and knew they had found their true calling.  By 2002, the Richardsons had fully committed to competing shorthairs in horseback field trials and breeding all-age shorthairs.  Relying on Bobbi’s considerable expertise as a breeder, the Richardsons whelped their first successful all-age litter on May 2, 2003 by mating a linebred Rockin Rollin Billy grandson—Sport’s See that Spekk—to their Rockin Rollin Billy daughter—Billy Dee’s Blues in A—that they had purchased from Cathy Black.  This breeding produced three all-age dogs that collectively won first and third placements at the 2004 GSPCA Futurity, 2007 NGSPA All-Age Dog of the Year, the 2009 NGPDA National Championship, the 2011 NGSPA Runner-Up National Championship, 2013 GSPCA Dual Sire of the Year, and 15 NGSPA All-Age Championships and Runner-Up Championships.  This Rockin Rollin Billy line breeding remains the foundation of the Richardsons’ Prairie Wind Kennels.

Lasting Contributions to the Sport

The Richardsons have generously given their time, leadership, and resources to our sport for many years.  Four regional and species NGSPA championships would not exist without them:  the Region 8, Region 9, Hungarian Partridge, and Chukar Championships.  Additionally, Keith and Bobbi Richardson spearhead the running of all three NGSPA invitational championships, which have become extraordinarily popular among shorthair field trialers.  They also conceived the NGSPA All-Age Invitational, at Bobbi’s suggestion.  As many NGSPA field trial committees can attest, approximately half the NGSPA championships either would not exist or would not have sufficient entries without the Richardsons’ support.

As President of the NGSPA for almost ten years, Keith has continued to grow the NGSPA at a time when most field trials have declining entries.  The NGSPA Nationals had 202 total entries this year, the highest in the event’s history, due in no small part to the Richardsons.  Keith personally initiated the move from Booneville, Arkansas, to Grovesprings, Missouri, performing a thorough review of potential grounds, personally touring the Field Trial Sportsmen’s Association grounds, and briefing the NGSPA Board on his findings and recommendations.  Keith and Bobbi also coordinated numerous upgrades to the facilities at the Grovesprings grounds to accommodate our Nationals, for which the Field Trial Sportsmen’s Association expressed immense gratitude in the enclosed letter.  Based on this year’s entries and feedback from the attendees, the field trial community gave the move to Grovesprings two thumbs up.

Keith has advanced the NGSPA in numerous other ways as NGSPA President.  Under his leadership, the NGSPA has continued to improve financially and competitively.  As President, Keith also established a committee in 2013 to make thorough, much-needed updates to the NGSPA bylaws and running rules, which the NGSPA Board approved in 2015.  More recently, Keith gathered input on and drafted the written NGSPA All-Age Standard.  Everyone who has served on the NGSPA Board has appreciated the professional and collaborative atmosphere under Keith’s tenure.  Keith comes to every board meeting exceptionally well prepared, with a detailed agenda and informed proposals.  I would be surprised if Keith spends fewer than two hours a day on NGSPA Board matters.  He invariably seeks out the input of all board members, as well as all field trial attendees generally, on all matters big and small.  Keith interfaces very well with sponsors, newcomers, and old timers.  Keith always respects the traditions of our sport, while also having the courage to propose changes when a tradition makes no sense.  The NGSPA could not have a better President and face of the organization.

While Bobbi may not officially share Keith’s title, her contributions to the sport and our breed at least equal Keith’s.  Bobbi does all the little things to ensure the success of the field trials run by the Richardsons, such as ordering trophies and ribbons, making sure the attendees have food and shelter, arranging judges’ travel, etc.  Collectively, these little things are really the big things.  Bobbi also manages the Purina Handler of the Year Program for the NGSPA, ensuring that each championship receives its Purina dog food, marketing materials, and monetary contribution.  This is no small task.  Whenever Keith makes a proposal to the NGSPA Board, there is a better than good chance that the idea first came from Bobbi.  Bobbi’s contributions also evidence themselves in the Prairie Wind Kennels breeding program.  Bobbi is primarily responsible for all breedings, including breeding the dogs described below.  The results speak for themselves.

Bobbi and Keith Richardson also show exceptional care and compassion for our dogs, our sport, and the competitors, prioritizing all three above winning.  If your dog becomes injured, you will most likely receive a call or e-mail from Bobbi after the trial checking up on your dog.  When my dog suffered shoulder injury, Bobbi reached out immediately to offer support and guidance, referred me to an orthopedic vet, and even offered the use of the Richardsons’ rehabilitation equipment and vet technician.  Bobbi’s help started him down the road to recovery.  Others could give similar examples of the Richardsons’ generosity.  Whenever a dog or horse gets injured during a field trial, Keith always offers a prayer before dinner for the health of the animal before anything else.  The Richardsons’ sportsmanship deserves recognition.

More recently, the Richardsons again demonstrated their lasting commitment to our sport by putting their Prairie Wind Ranch in Payette, Idaho in a trust so that it will remain available as field trial grounds in perpetuity.  These impressive grounds with second-to-none facilities not only host the NGSPA Region 9 and Chukar Championships, but also numerous other American Field all-breed championships and classics and AKC field trials.  The Richardsons have made the Prairie Wind Ranch available to all who ask, no matter the breed or governing organization.  By placing their ranch in trust for the benefit of the sport of field trialing, the Richardsons have helped ensure the future of field trials in the West.

Fittingly, the Richardsons also played an integral role in creating the GSP Field Trial Hall of Fame to which I nominate the Richardsons for induction.  When the Hall of Fame started to become a reality through Hayley Killam’s efforts, she asked for support from the shorthair fraternity.  The Richardsons stepped up as major contributors and have continued to support improvements to our Hall of Fame and the evolution of its displays.  Keith currently serves as Vice President of the Bird Dog Foundation—the entity that manages the National Bird Dog Museum.

Record as Owners, Competitors, and Breeders

While the Richardsons’ service to the sport would merit election to the Hall of Fame even if they had never owned a shorthair, their cumulative record as owners and breeders and Keith’s accomplishments as an amateur handler are impressive nonetheless.  The Richardsons are tireless promoters of the all-age dog and, in particular, the foremost keepers of the “dark dog” flame—two attributes which do not often intersect in our breed.  The Richardsons have successfully bred and campaigned numerous liver and liver roan all-age dogs nonetheless, along with several liver and white dogs.

FDSB records describe 1 NGSPA National Champion, 2 NGSPA Runner-Up National Champions, 1 NGSPA National Amateur Champion, 1 NGSPA National Shooting Dog Champion, 4 NGPDA National Champions, 2 NGPDA Runner-Up National Champions, 1 NGPDA National Amateur Champion, 1 NGPDA Runner-Up National Amateur Champion, the inaugural NGSPA All-Age Invitational Champion, the inaugural NGPSA Open Shooting Dog Invitational Champion, 3 NGSPA All-Age Dogs of the Year, 1 NGSPA Open Shooting Dog of the Year, and countless other NGSPA Champions and Runner-Up Champions owned by the Richardsons.  The following list includes the Richardsons’ dogs’ championship wins, FDSB win records, and FDSB production records, all of which the American Field has verified in the enclosed summaries.[1]  Unless otherwise noted, the Richardsons bred and co-owned all dogs shown below:

More than anyone else in NGSPA competition, Keith and Bobbi Richardson have also worked to promote and maintain the versatility of our breed.  They have successfully campaigned numerous shorthairs in NAVHDA testing.  In fact, one of their NAVHDA Versatile Champions—RU-CH VC Prairie Wind’s Razor’s Edge MH (“Mickey”)—not only obtained his NAVHDA NA Prize I, but also took runner up in a NGSPA amateur shooting dog championship.  Mickey is believed to be the first NAVHDA Versatile Champion to obtain a NGSPA championship win.  Many of their other NGSPA winners have also won NAVHDA Prizes I or II.  The Richardsons also hold the only dual-sanctioned NGSPA championships with a retrieving requirement—the Hun and Region 8 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Conclusion

The foregoing provides a limited sample of the merits of the Richardsons’ Hall of Fame candidacy.  I have also enclosed an e-mail of support from Mike Patrick.  I have been promised additional letters or e-mails of support from others in the GSP field trial community further describing the Richardsons’ contributions.  I will forward these as they come in.

Thank you for considering the candidacy of Keith and Bobbi Richardson for the GSP Field Trial Hall of Fame.  Please feel free to contact me if you need any other information supporting my nomination.  I hope you agree that the Richardsons are worthy of the Hall of Fame and, if so, will join me in Grand Junction, Tennessee to celebrate their induction.

[1] Please note that the official FDSB records appear to omit some NGSPA championships, for example some earlier Great Plains and Rocky Mountain Championships, for unknown reasons.  Those championship wins are therefore excluded from this list.  For a few dogs, the American Field provided placement records, but not production records.  One number in parentheses after the dog’s registered name indicates the number of FDSB placements only.  Three numbers in parentheses indicates FDSB placement and production records.

[2] The Richardsons acquired this dog in December 2002.  The list of this dog’s championship wins excludes wins from before December 2002.
